PURPOSE: To increase a compression rate, while keeping the fidelity of a signal by using a coding table in which frequency component data from an entropy encoder are registered in cross-reference respectively. CONSTITUTION: A video signal from an input terminal 10 is subject to non- correlation processing, quantization and sequence processing. The resulting data are fed to a coding switch 60, from which the data are given to a run length coding circuit 20 or a single symbol coding circuit 64. As a result, the high sensitivity with respect to an input sub-band number is obtained. Respective outputs from the run length coding circuit 20 and the single symbol coding circuit 64 are fed to a Huffman coding circuit 66. The Huffman coding circuit 66 provides data for any of a large number of different coding tables to the received data, in response to the sub band number received with the data. Thus, the compression rate is increased, while keeping the signal fidelity. |
