5-Methyl-2-(1'-methyl-2'-propenyl)- 4-hexen-1-ol (I) is new, esp. the optically active (-)-(1'S,2S)- and (+)-(1'R,2R) enantiomers (Ia, Ib). USE/ADVANTAGE - (Ia), (Ib) and racemic mixts. of the two are useful perfume ingredients. (Ia) has a floral, rose, natural, very delicate fragrance with a slight trace of cork, slightly rosinol and green, with an overall scent reminiscent of rose and geranium. (Ib) has a floral, rose fragrance with an edge of Rosacene (RTM floral compsn., Firmenich SA), with a more pronounced rose scent than (Ia). (Ia) has a fragrance more like citronellol than (Ib). The prods. are esp. useful as perfume ingredients in perfumes, toilet waters, soap, shower and bath gels, shampoos, cosmetics, body deodourants, air fresheners, detergents, fabric conditioners, household maintenance prods., etc. (claimed). (Ia) and (b) are also useful as starting materials in the prodn. of 4-isopropenyl-2,3-dimethyl-1 -cyclopentanemethanol (IIa) and (4-hydroxymethyl)-1- cyclopentyl) -1-ethanone (IIb) having the formula (II) in which Z is O or CH2.
