PURPOSE:To obtain a polymer having high reaction selectivity and useful for electric and electronic decomposition, etc., using an easily handleable catalyst in high yield by polymerizing a specific aromatic compound and a sulfur halide in the presence of a specific composite catalyst without using a solvent, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective polymer is produced by polymerizing (A) at least one kind of aromatic compound selected from the compound of formula I (Z is halogen, 1-10C alkyl, 1-10C alkoxy or 1-10C alkylthio; n is 1-4) and the compound of formula II (-A- is direct bond, -O- or -S-) with (B) a sulfur halide such as sulfur monochloride in the presence of a composite catalyst consisting of a group IIA to VIIA metal, etc., and an organic carboxylic acid anhydride (e.g. trifluoroacetic acid anhydride) in the absence of solvent or in a Friedel- Crafts reaction solvent such as 1-methylnaphthalene. Preferably, the molar ratio of (metal/organic carboxylic acid anhydride) is 0.05-10 and that of (aromatic compound/sulfur halide) is 0.8-10. |
