<p>An apparatus is provided for scanning a photographic film (30) or the like with a laser beam and providing for accurate registration. The apparatus includes a roll source or cassette of film (32) to be supplied and used and a take-up cassette (34) to receive the exposed film in the form of a roll. Between the source of the film (32) and the take-up cassette (34) there is provided an arrangement consisting of one or two knurled segments or rollers (36) which peripherally engage the film along the lateral edges thereof in order to transport the film past a laser beam generator and scanner (22) adjacent which the knurled roller or rollers (36) are positioned. This draws the film at a closely controlled rate past a slot (28) through which the laser beam exits in order to photographically process the film. Between the knurled roller (36) or rollers and the take-up cassette (34) are provided exit rollers (80, 82) which engage the film at a slightly faster speed than the speed at which the film is traveling. The take-up cassette (34) is provided with a slip clutch (92) in order to compensate for the build up of film (30) on the roll as the process progresses. The source cassette (32) is provided with lips (64, 66) which engage the film and which serve as light seal. These lips (64, 66) also provide a drag on the film (30) to prevent the film's being freely spooled out without control. The drag of the lips (64, 66) is supplemented by a friction brake (72) provided in association with the source cassette.</p> |
