Pyridone dyes of formula (I), wherein R<1> stands for hydrogen or C1-C4 alkyl, R<2> and R<3> may be identical or different and independently stand for hydrogen, optionally substituted C1-C12 alkyl, C5-C7 cycloalkyl, optionally substituted phenyl, optionally substituted pyridyl, optionally substituted C1-C12 alkanoyl, C1-C12 alkoxycarbonyl, optionally substituted C1-C12 alkylsulphonyl, C5-C7 cycloalkysulphonyl, optionally substituted phenylsulphonyl, optionally substituted pyridylsulphonyl, optionally substituted benzoyl, pyridylcarbonyl or thienylcarbonyl or R<2> and R<3> together with the nitrogen atom linking them stand for succinimido optionally substituted by C1-C4 alkyl, phthalimido optionally substituted by C1-C4 alkyl or a five- or six-membered saturated heterocyclic residue optionally containing additional heteroatoms, X stands for CH or nitrogen, Y stands for cyano or a residue of formula CO-W, CO-OW or CO-NHW, wherein W stands for hydrogen, C1-C8 alkyl which is optionally substituted and may be interrupted by one or two oxygen atoms with an ether function, C5-C7 cycloalkyl, phenyl or tolyl, and Z stands for an aromatic carbocyclic or heterocyclic residue.
