Fires, particularly oil fires, are extinguished using a vertical pipe at the flame outlet. This increases the distance between the flame and the outlet, giving a cooling effect on the area immediately adjacent to it and aiding active measures for cooling. Re-ignition of the outflowing medium by the remaining flame can be prevented after the pipe has been removed, also sideways escape of the medium at the pipe bottom end. Equipment can be provided for combustion of the medium with the minimum amount of residue, and there can be ignition equipment at the top pipe end. ADVANTAGE - Rapid extinguishing of oil well fires in particular, using only small amounts of coolant and extinguishing agent.
