The holder of a machine tool has a tapered shank (1) which runs into a collar with a circumferential groove (4). When the tool is not in use the tapered shank is protected from cooling medium and from fine particles of swarf by a hood (6). The hood is of cylindrical form and has internal ribs which match the longitudinal contour of the tapered shank. An internal spring finger (7) has one end riveted to the housing wall whilst the other end has a rounded projection (8) which engages the circumferential groove.
