PURPOSE:To offer the optical waveguide device which operates without depending upon a polarized wave direction and requires no complicate potential adjustment, etc. CONSTITUTION:An optical waveguide 24b which propagates light in the direction of the optical axis is formed on the surface of a substrate 22 of uniaxial ferroelectric crystal. Electric fields 26a and 26b apply an electric field in the optical axis direction of this optical waveguide 24b. Consequently, the refractive index to the light traveling in the optical waveguide 25b in the optical axis direction varies almost uniformly as to an optional polarized wave perpendicular to the traveling direction. The refractive index at an optional position in the optical waveguide 24b can easily be varied. In this case, the variation in the refractive index does not depend upon the polarization direction of the light traveling in the optical waveguide, so the device having no polarized wave dependency can be offered. |
