A rod-shaped resonator (34) is movably mounted in the hand-grip housing of a hand-held measurement probe (20) with a measurement tip (229 protruding from the free end. The spring-mounted resonator is connected to ultrasonic transducers connected to an electronic generator and a period or frequency detector circuit. A base unit (74) contg. a display (76) is connected to the probe via a cable (72). Individual parameters of the resonator and electronic generator are held in a memory (66) in the housing of the probe. The base unit is detachably connectable to one or more measurement probes.
