PURPOSE: To provide a device for instantaneously indicating insertion of an intravenous needle into a blood vessel. CONSTITUTION: When the needle 14 of an intravenous needle 10 is inserted into a blood vessel, insertion into the blood vessel is instantaneously and visually indicated by use of a solid optical fiber 20 mounted in the needle 14. The end of the optical fiber 20 is polished to match the end of the needle 14. The optical fiber 20 is of an outside diameter such that it extends within the cannula of the needle 14. When inserted into a blood vessel and exposed to blood, the pointed end immediately reflects the red color of the blood onto magnifying devices 30, 36 provided at the proximal end of the optical fiber. The user can rapidly make sure the flow of blood and the insertion into the blood vessel without being exposed to the blood. |
