An unsaturated polyester for bonding fibrous material is made by reacting (a) an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid (or ester-forming derivative thereof), (b) isosorbide, and (c) another dihydric alcohol; the isosorbide being present in an amount of 10 to 80 mol. per cent of the total dihydric material. The reaction mixture may also include (d) a saturated dicarboxylic acid and (e) a polyhydric alcohol having at least three hydroxyl groups. Specified reactants are: for (a)-maleic, fumaric, itaconic, chloromaleic, mesaconic and cis-3,6-endomethylene-tetrahydrophthalic acid; for (c)-ethylene-, diethylene-, propylene-, dipropylene- and 2,3- or 1,3-butylene glycols and polyoxyethylene- and polyoxypropylene-bisphenols; for (d)-succinic, adipic, azelaic, sebacic, pimalic, phthalic and tetrachlorophthalic acids; for (e)-glycerol. The fibrous material may be cotton, hemp or a synthetic textile fibre, but is preferably glass. The polyester in powdered form may be poured or dusted on to a fibre mat or a dispersion (e.g. an aqueous dispersion) containing the resin may be passed through the fibre mat, but preferably the resin is made into fibres which are intermixed with the reinforcing fibrous material. The composite product is then heated to bond the polyester resin on to the fibrous material to form a bonded fibre mat useful as a reinforcing agent for various resins (especially mixtures of unsaturated polyesters and vinyl monomers).
