Process for measuring the level of a bath of liquid metal in a converter by means of an oxygen lance provided with probes for measuring the dissolved oxygen activity and the temperature of the bath of liquid metal and of the slag on top of the liquid metal. The process consists in measuring the speed of travel of the lance while it moves up, in establishing the curve of variation in the dissolved oxygen activity in the bath of liquid metal and in the slag and the curve of variation in the temperature of the bath of liquid metal and of the slag, in locating the time representing, on the curve of variation in the dissolved oxygen activity, the change in the dissolved oxygen activity at the level of the interface between liquid metal and slag, in locating the times representing, on the curve of variation in temperature, the changes in temperature at the level of the interface between liquid metal and slag, in verifying that the first time lies in the range of the other two times to validate the measurement, and in deducing the height of the bath of liquid metal using the product of the first time multiplied by the speed of travel of the lance.
