A point for a ball pen is made from a sheet metal blank by a plurality of pressing operations. The blank may be of copper, brass, aluminium or stainless steel and is severed from a strip 40, Fig. 1 (not shown), by a punch 1 and immediately pressed into cup shape 4a by a punch 2. An ejector 6 is provided. In further stages, Figs. 2-11 (not shown), the cup is elongated and reduced in diameter, the closed end 4b is punched out, Fig. 12 (not shown), and the forward end of the tubular workpiece is reduced in diameter by pushing through a series of dies 22, Figs. 13-17 (not shown). In a further dye set 30, 31, Fig. 18 (not shown), an intermediate enlargement 4e is formed, and the end of reduced diameter is partially closed; the opposite end is then also partially closed in a further die set 34, Fig. 19 (not shown). The resulting workpiece is forged to the shape of a ball housing in a die set 35-38, Fig. 20 (not shown), ink passages are formed by a tool 39, Fig. 21 (not shown), the ball is then inserted and made captive in the point dy a tool 43, Fig. 24 (not shown). A transfer mechanism is provided for transporting the workpieee between the various working stages.
