An atherectomy system for opening a patient's obstructed vessel and applying a drug to the atherectomy site, comprises in combination: a flexible guide wire (160) insertable into said vessel, a flexible catheter (21) with a blade means (22) at its distal end, means at said distal end of said flexible catheter for applying at least one restenosis inhibiting drug to the atherectomy site while opening said vessel.
