A novel pharmaceutical composition for use as an anti-neurodegenerative agent, comprising anabaseine, DMAB-anabaseine or anabasine in combination wi th a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, the anabaseine having the general chemical structure: (see formula I) and the anabaseine, DMAB-anabaseine or anabasine also known by the following respective chemical formulae: 2-(3-pyridyl)-3,4,5,6-tetrahydropyridine, 3-[p- (dimethylamino) benzylidene]-3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2,3'-bypyridine, and 2-(3-pyridyl) piperidin e. A novel method of making an anabaseine-based pharmaceutical composition is also disclosed.
