PURPOSE:To obtain a practical small-sized magnetic refrigerator which can perform sufficient cooling capacity with a simple structure by securing a superconducting coil in a strong magnetic field to be generated in a permanent current mode, and altering a moving mechanism to a rotary type with respect to a shape disposition of a magnetic shield. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic actuator 2 is secured to the intermediate part of a pair of superconducting coils 1 and 1' which are coaxially disposed, and a magnetic shield 3 is so set that the direction of lines of magnetic force becomes parallel to the surfaces of flat plates 3, 3' (A). Then, since the lines of magnetic force pass the inner space of the plates 3, 3' of superconductors, the actuator 2 of the space is energized. Then, when a magnetic shield 3 is rotated at 90 deg. around the central axis of the space as in (B), the plates 3, 3' perpendicularly cross the lines of magnetic force, which run about the outside of the shield 3, and the actuator 2 in the space is degaussed. Thus, the actuator is repeatedly energized and degaussed to generate heat by the energization and to generate cold by the degaussing.
