A method for treating hepatic disease is provided. In an embodiment, the method comprises the step of administering to a patient having hepatic disease a composition including a compound chosen from the group consisting of: L-2-oxothiazolidine-4-carboxylate; glutathione esters; and thiazolidine-4-carboxylate analogs, in an amount sufficient to stimulate intracellular glutathione synthesis. The compound can be administered parenterally or enterally.
