Vibration of a structure (11) due to the passage of fluids therepast is reduced by encircling the structure (11) with a sleeve (12). The sleeve (12) is formed as an open mesh with parallel rods (13) and transverse flexible ties (14). The sleeve circumference for a given structure is chosen to be at least 1.1 times the structure circumference although a factor of up to 1.6 may be chosen. The vortices formed in the open mesh as the sleeve vibrates in the fluid flow are thought to prevent vibrations in the structure itself. |
