The writing instrument such as a ball pen or a felt tip pen has a barrel (2) which houses the writing element (4). The writing element is held in its retracted position by a compression spring (6) which acts on a shoulder (8). The writing element is extended by depressing the button (25) which is attached to the upper end of the writing element. Spring fingers (31) extend from the lower end of the press button (25). When the button is depressed these fingers are forced through a hole (16) and then spring outwards to engage the underside (15) of an internal shoulder and so hold the writing element in its extended position.
