Method for monitoring a surface treatment made on a component by means of a radiation beam, for example a continuous laser beam, consisting in taking by means of an optical pyrometer (28) a temperature profile along a line of the surface of the component passing through the treated zone, in calculating the temperatures at depth in the component vertical to this measurement line, in comparing the measured and calculated temperature values with reference values, and in determining from these comparisons control signals for a laser generator (22) and means (24) for displacing the component in a given direction.
