In a continuous winding machine in which a roller 20 applies pressure to the wound mass during winding into a spindle (figure 1), the spindle is moved to the figure 3 position just before completion of winding, with roller 21 takes over the pressing function, and the next spindle is brought to the winding position. where it is contacted by roller 20. Operation of cutter 27 now causes the web to start winding onto the new spindle. The rollers are mounted on pivoted arms which are kept generally vertical in use by moving carriages 16 and 17 horizontally in accordance with increasing roll diameter and roll position.
