TWIST-REDUCING DEVICE, SUBMARINE CABLE SYSTEM, AND SUBMARINE CABLE LAYING METHOD

PURPOSE: To safely and surely install a cable system in the sea from a cable tank by avoiding rotation-induced damage to a part that is less rigid to torsion in cable. CONSTITUTION: A device preventing torque concentrating on a heavily armored cable part from being abruptly applied to a lightly armored cable part connected next to it during installation of a submarine cable system is described. A pair of helically wound steel-armored rods rigidly connected to the heavier cable part forms a tubular extension which extends first several feet of light cable. The rods resist rotation since they make rubbing contact with a cable engine drum. Therefore, the covered cable in a rod tube device rotates only by the same extent as the tube. The rotation produced is fully within a range safely permitted per unit cable length.
