X-rays from the source (12) are directed to be transmitted through the breast (16) of the patient. An X-ray receiver (17) is placed opposite the source to intercept the emergent X-rays and form an image of the internal structure of thr breast. A compressor (43,44) holds the breast firm in the direction of X-ray propagation. Two image stores (26,28) hold the mean visual recorded data per image element. A generator (31) excites the source (12) in stages. A differential amplifier (36) and an operational amplifier (37) determine if the latest recorded data for a certain image element matches the mean stored data. A recorder (38) registers these data about the average while anther uses the latest data that differs from these averages for each image element.
