A method and apparatus are disclosed for pretreating logs with bark thereon prior to a conventional debarker, and for removing the bark from a log without the need for conventional debarkers. A plurality of intersecting helical cuts are performed, penetrating the bark layer, thereby defining discrete bark pieces of nominal size. When practiced without the need for conventional debarking apparatus, the present invention includes scraping tools for dislodging the bark from the log. |
