In plain nut to bolt interfaces, when the nut is tightened against the contact face a small but important compression of the nut occurs. This leads to an uneven distribution of force throughout the nut thread with the majority carried by the first two threads. This nut incorporates a chamfered face (3') which abuts the contact face. This forces the base of the nut radially outwards. Due to the angled faces of the threads the resulting greater nut diameter decreases the load transmitted to the first threads, producing better load distribution.
