A poly(vinylsulphonate) having a relatively high molecular weight and a method for preventing the deposition of scale (deposits), in particular inorganic sulphate such as barium sulphate, wherein a water- containing liquid, present in or produced by a subterranean formation is brought into contact with a water-containing solution which, in dissolved form, contains a poly(vinylsulphonate) having a relatively high molecular weight. The water-containing liquid has a pH which is equal to or smaller than 6.0, and the poly(vinylsulphonate) has a molecular weight of about 9000 to about 30,000.
