PURPOSE:To highly strengthen fiber reinforced thermoplastic resin formed article consisting of stampable sheet made in paper making manner by a method wherein fiber reinforced thermoplastic resin, the edge part of which is folded by heating so as to insert continuous fiber bundle in the folded position, is melted under heat with a mold so as to be formed into the desired shape. CONSTITUTION:In order to form a high strength member such as a bumper beam for automobile or the like out of stampable sheet 2 made in paper making manner, continuous reinforcing fiber bundle 1, preferable one impregnated with the same thermoplastic resin as said sheet and the stampable sheet 2 made in paper making manner are heated so as to turn the thermoplastic resin into molten state. In succession, the end of the heated stampable sheet 2 made in paper making manner is folded so as to insert the heated continuous reinforcing fiber bundle 1 in the folded part 2a. After that, time resultant sheet is positioned on a bottom force 4 and compressed with a top force 3. In the crossection of the U-shaped formed matter 5 formed as described above, the continuous reinforcing fiber bundle 6 impregnated fully with the thermoplastic resin can be positioned to the sides of the thermoplastic resin reinforced with chopped fibers with random directions. |
