PURPOSE:To enable usually non-polarized laser rays to be used as exciting light of a solid-state laser without loss by a method wherein exciting laser rays are made to irradiate the laser medium of the solid-state laser after they are made to pass through a polarizing beam splitter. CONSTITUTION:Exciting laser rays 1a-1c are made to irradiate the laser medium of a solid-state laser after they are made to pass through a polarizing beam splitter (PBS). When non-polarized light rays are made to impinge against a PBS, the light rays are split into two, transmitted light rays and reflected light rays, where the transmitted light rays are P-polarized and the reflected light rays are S-polarized. That is, both the transmitted light and the reflected light are linearly polarized, and furthermore when laser rays 1a-1c are divided into two through a PBS, the output sum of the laser rays 1a-1c are nearly equal to that of the non-divided laser rays 1a-1c, that is, the laser rays are divided almost without loss. Therefore, even if the exciting laser rays 1a-1c are non-polarized, they can be converted into linearly polarized laser rays without loss by making them pass through a PBS. By this setup, exciting laser rays can be used without reflection loss. |
