Distortion of wood is prevented by impregnation of at least a surface layer with a mono or poly ethylene or propylene glycol or a derivative thereof in a concentration of at least 50% and subsequently drying the wood to reduce the moisture content to below the fibre saturation point. The wood may be in the form of veneer, plywood, or laminated wood and may be cut after treatment. The derivative may be an ether, ester, or ether ester. Impregnation may be effected at 0-200 DEG C. under normal pressure by immersion or brushing for 0.5-5 mins. The solvent may be an alcohol, ester, ether, ketone, petroleum hydrocarbon, or terpene. The wood may be treated simultaneously or subsequently with a water-soluble polysaccharide. It may also be treated with an ionic on non-ionic surface active substance. |
