The invention relates to an internal combustion engine (10) of the type including a first (12) and a second (14) group of cylinders which are respectively associated with a first (20) and with a second (30) exhaust manifold, the two outlet tubes (22, 32) of which emerge in a common catalytic converter (28) and of the type including means for temporarily interrupting combustion in the cylinders of the first group (12), characterised in that it includes a bypass valve (36) arranged in the outlet tube (22) of the first exhaust manifold (20) which is connected to a bypass pipe (40) which emerges in the exhaust line (48) downstream of the catalytic converter (28), and means for controlling the bypass valve so as to bring about the bypass downstream of the catalytic converter (28) of the fresh gases emitted by the first group of cylinders (12) when combustion is interrupted in the group of cylinders. <IMAGE>
