A sanding machine for walls and other surfaces comprises a rotatable sanding element 27, 28, a casing 16 for the element, a motor 2 for driving the element, means for adjustment of the casing relative to the motor along the axis of rotation of the element, means for yieldably and resiliently coupling the element to the motor, and suction means within the casing for the removal of dust produced by sanding. In the machine described, the sanding element comprises an abrasive sheet 28 held against a plate 27 by a screw 30 threaded into a bush 25 supported in a projection 24 of the plate 27. The projection 24 is mounted on studs 23 which are attached to a boss 20 mounted on a drive spindle 8 driven via reduction gearing 6, 7 from the motor 2. The projection 24 is urged axially of studs 23 by a spring 26. The boss 20 carries a disc 21 with blades 22 which, when driven, produce suction in the casing 16 to withdraw dust into a receptacle 36. The casing has a neck 13 screw threaded on to a neck 12 of the motor housing and clampable in an adjusted position by a nut 15. |
