PURPOSE:To obtain an alkaline battery which can be quickly charged while maintaining a high capacity by heating an active material mainly made of nickel hydroxide and added with cobalt powder for use as a nickel electrode. CONSTITUTION:Cobalt is most preferable to increase the utilization factor of a nickel electrode, cobalt ions are diffused in an active material layer at the time of oxidation, thus improving the utilization factor of an active material. Metal cobalt is oxidized and diffused in the active material layer by heating. The electricity quantity larger than the calculated value is required to allow nickel hydroxide to function as the active material during the first formation, and the discharge assurance capacity is obtained. An alkaline storage battery using the nickel electrode can quickly be charged while maintaining a high capacity. The heating temperature of the active material is set to about 160-210 deg.C, and carbonyl cobalt powder is preferably used for cobalt powder. |
