A method of localising communication and devices (DTE) connected via a connector (NAE) to a local network. Individual connection position information (Pi) is stored in each connector (NAE). After each activation of the end devices (DTC) the stored position information (Pi) is called up with a call up procedure (ISSP) via a serial data interface (ISS). The called up information (Pi) is transmitted together with end device indentification information (Qi), using a communication inherent transmission procedure, to network management means (NME) which administers and monitors the network. USE/ADVANTAGE - Enables local allocation of end devices to the network connectors without a change of direction needing to be registered by the user at the network management centre.
