The belt conveyor for the vertical conveyance of loose materials has a vertical conveyor belt (2) and a top belt (7) for moving the material (10) forwards horizontally. The conveyor belt is provieed with two entrainment strips (1) and flat belts forming two endless side sections. The upper area of inlet chutes (12) directly in front of the material transfer in the area of the entrainment strips (1) forms, with the part of the side wall (13) above, a unit (14) which is resiliently mounted so that if the material particles jam between this unit (14) and the entrainment strips (1) the resiliently mounted unit moves outwards and the side wall (13) of part of the side wall belonging to this unit forms an incline which forces the material particles back into the belt conveyor.
