A noble-gas flashlamp (11) having a self-replenishing mercury-pool cathode (16). The lamp includes an envelope (12) which is transparent to UV radiation and forms a linearly extending discharge chamber for holding a noble gas discharge material. At the cathode end, the envelope forms a cavity or bubble (18). The cathode is formed by an electrode (16) and a pool of liquid mercury (17) in the cavity (18). The electrode (16) is electrically and thermally conducting. Liquid mercury (17) covers and is in heat exchange relation with the elecrode. For heat transfer the cathode extends beyond the envelope so that it directly contacts the coolant material. The anode comprises an electrically and thermally conducting electrode (23) at the anode end of the discharge chamber. The anode may also be formed with a cavity or bubble (22) and with a heavier heat sink (30) in the form of a tungsten rod contacting the lamp coolant material.
|
