Sulphonated naphthol type dis:azo dyes of formula (I), as free acids, are new. In (I), D1 = phenyl; D2 = p-tolyl; n and m = 0.6-1.4, provided m + n = 2. (I) are made conventionally by diazotising a mixt. of aniline and p-toluidine (esp. to provide n and m = 0.8-1.2), then coupling to 1-(2-hydroxynaphthalene-6- sulphonamido)-8-naphthol-4,6-disulphonic acid (II). (I) are normally used as the Na salt, is prepns. in which (I) represents at least 90% of the dye component.
