A method of uniformly reducing the size of pores in a fine wire mesh screen is provided to reduce the size of particulates passible through the screen. The screen (16) is placed in a vacuum chamber (10) with a target material (32). Atoms are transferred from the target material to the screen in a random fashion by bombarding the target material with ions such that the surface ejected atoms from the target material randomly collect on the screen and form a thin film coating thereon to reduce the size of the pores in the screen.
