Extn. of metals from ores, in which the reaction is carried out in a special indirectly heated rotating tube oven at temps. up to and including 1200 deg. C. The reaction is done in a pure reaction gas medium free from combustible gases and in a rotating tube which is either ceramic or a steel tube which is ceramic coated by plasma. Throughout the process there are no. liq. products in the rotating tube, the reaction is fully gas/solid phase. Specifically rotating oven tube is usually between 4-10m long with outer dia. 0.5-1.5m, either of ceramic or coated with ceramic to a depth of 0.5-0.25mm. All the usual oxide redns. can be carried out using H or CO giving such metals as Fe, As, V, Ni, Co etc. In addn. chlorination of oxides to give volatile chlorides can be done e.g. MgO to MgCl2 and TiO to TiCl4, and TiCl4 can be converted to Ti.
