1,146,145. Polymerization catalyst for unsaturated hydrocarbons. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 13 May, 1966 [14 May, 1965], No. 21449/66. Heading C3P. A polymerization catalyst comprises (1) a silylchromate having a group of the formula, where R is a hydrocarbyl radical containing from 1 to 14 carbon atoms and (2) an organoaluminium compound having at least one and no more than two oxyhydrocarbyl groups attached to the aluminium atom. The catalyst may be supported e.g. on a silica having a surface area of from 50 to 1,000 square meters per gram. A compound of the formula R y MX z where R is a C 1-14 hydrocarbyl group, M is Al or Zn, X is hydrogen or halogen, y is 2 or 3, z is 0 or 1, and the sum of y and z is equal to the valency of the metal M. An aluminium trialkyl may also be present. The catalyst is used to homo- and copolymerize mono-olefins, and also to copolymerize mono-olefins with conjugated or non-conjugated dienes. The polymerization may be effected in an inert solvent, or in bulk. Hydrogen may be present. Exemplified polymers are polyethylene, copolymers of ethylenebutene-1, ethylene-propylene, ethylene-butadiene, ethylene-dicyclopentadiene, and ethylenehexene. The exemplified silylchromate is bistriphenylsilyl chromate. |
