The device disclosed comprises a coarse-resolution indicator (1) and a fine-resolution indicator (2). Associated with the coarse-resolution indicator (2) is a coarse-resolution magnetic-flux sensor (4). Associated with the fine-resolution indicator (2) are also magnetic-flux sensors (6, 7). The magnetic-flux sensors (4-7) are mobile relatively to the indicators (1, 2). The magnetic-flux sensors (4-7) are each made up of a pair of magnetic-field-dependent resistors behind which permanent magnets are located. When relative motion occurs between the two indicators (1, 2) and the magnetic-field-dependent resistors (4-7), the magnetic flux through the resistors changes, causing their resistance to change as a function of the motion. The change in resistance of the resistors (4-7) is measured to determine the actual position of the component.
