The measuring dedevice has a rectangular block (9) housing a movable sensor (10,16) with its point (16) maintained in c-ntaccontact with the surface of the web material. The block (9) is itself contained within a housing (7) moved across the surface of the web via the wheeled carriage (1) of the measuring device. The block (9) lies in line contact with the web on either side of the sensor (10,16). Pref. the line contact between the block (9) and the surface of the web is obtained via rails (15) extending along each longitudinal edge of the housing (7).
