A beater roller for opening sliver is fitted at its circumference with teeth which have a structured surface pattern on their flanks. The teeth can be hardened by boride treatment. The pattern can be approximately radial grooves, circular recesses or holes. The flanks of the teeth can have a stepped taper towards the periphery. Pref. a beater roller running at 5000-8000 rpm has teeth moving at a circumferential speed of up to 30 m/s. The teeth have grooves (18) on the sides but not near the front which engages the sliver. They are tapered towards the tip. During mfr. the teeth are hardened after shaping by coating them with a 20-30 micrometre thick iron boride layer in an inert atmos. at 900 deg.C. USE/ADVANTAGE - The method provides wear resistant beater rollers for Open End spinning which do not generate excessive dust.
