A device is provided in the form of a brush in order to vary, increasing it repetitively and automatically, the lateral separation of brush bristles or pins 1, 18 arranged in contiguous rows 2-2', in such a manner that contiguous, tangled hairs are separated laterally in order to facilitate their untangling. In one preferred embodiment, the rows 2-2' of brush bristles or pins are impelled in a mutual oscillating linear movement by means of a mechanism with connecting rods 3, a crankshaft 5 with offset elbows 7 coupled to the connecting rods 3 and an electric drive motor 15. Alternatively, the increase in lateral separation between pins is achieved by the repetitive expansion/contraction in a radial direction of an elastic membrane 20 on which the pins or bristles 18 are rigidly mounted. <IMAGE>
