The combined compressor and electrical generator, is contained in a common housing (7) fitted directly to the i.c. engine (4), with electromagnetic clutches (9,12) between the engine output shaft (8) of this engine and the compressor (3) and between a belt drive (5) rotated by the vehicle engine and the compressor (3), to allow its operation from either or both drive sources. Pref. the compressor (3) has a hollow shaft (15) through which the main shaft (10) between the belt drive (5) and the switched coupling (18) is passed. ADVANTAGE - Allows vehicle heating or air-conditioning to be maintained in operation when vehicle is at a standstill.
