The present invention relates to a novel catalyst complex comprising a BF3:H3PO4 adduct, and at least one polar hydrocarbon formed in situ. The catalyst complex may optionally include water as well as an added solubilizing agent. The invention further provides a pretreatment method for enhancing the isoparaffins selectivity of a catalyst complex containing a BF3:H3PO4 adduct, utilizing an apparatus as set forth in the drawing wherein reactants and catalyst components are fed into stirred tank reactor (20) through lines (50, 52, 21 and 22). Products are separated from spent catalyst in decanter (30) and further separated in distillation column (40). Overhead products stream rich in BF3 and propane are fed into BF3/propane fractionator (60). Recyclable material is returned from distillation column (40) and fractionator (60) to reactor (20). Product streams are withdrawn for storage, further processing or resale.
