PRODUCTION OF BENZYLIDENE DERIVATIVE OF POLYHYDRIC ALCOHOL

摘要

PURPOSE:To (semi-)continuously obtain the subject derivative useful as a gelling agent or a transparentizing agent by reacting polyhydric alcohol and benzaldehyde in a solvent in the presence of an ion-exchange resin as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Polyhydric alcohol (preferably sorbitol) is made to react with benzaldehyde in a solvent (e.g. water, hydrocarbon or ketone) in the presence of an ion-exchange resin (preferably cationic ion-exchange resin) or a polymer complex (e.g. PS) immobilizing Lewis acid (e.g. aluminum chloride) as a catalyst to afford the objective derivative.
