A CAD unit apparatus and method therefor in which nominal dimensional values with tolerances are automatically converted to medium-tolerance values, wherein the positive and negative tolerance values are equal in magnitude. The dimensional values known for one or more views, including medium-tolerance values, are used to generate unknown values. The automatic transformation occurs on a per-view basis. The transformed views are displayed and the changed and unchanged areas can be displayed with distinguishing characteristics.
