PURPOSE:To always keep character quality of printed matter centering around a character stable by mounting a printing quality evaluating means comparing the reference character thickness value stored in a memory means with a measured character thickness value to evaluate printing quality and an output means outputting the evaluation result obtained from the printing quality evaluating means. CONSTITUTION:The variable density image signal of the whole of the specific page in character printed matter is taken in by an input means 11. This signal is binarized on the basis of a certain threshold value by a numerating means 12. Next, injustice data is removed by an injustice data removing means 13 and the thickness of a character is calculated by a character thickness calculating means. The measured millimeter unit thickness value being the mean thickness value of the character printed matter is calculated by a millimeter unit converting means 15. The measured millimeter unit thickness value stored in a memory means 16 is compared with the reference millimeter unit thickness value preliminarily stored in the memory means 16 by a printing quality evaluating means to evaluate the printing quality of the character printed matter. By this method, the generation of inferior printed matter can be reduced to a large extent.
