Prepn. of DDTr-free 1,1-bis(chlorophenyl) -2,2,2-trichloroethanol (I) from technical (I) coprises liq.-liq. extraction at -5 to +100 deg.C by dissolving technical (I) at 1-60% in an oxygenated organic solvent (A) contg. up to 50% water and extracting the DDT, with a hydrocarbon solvent (B). (I) may also be added to a mixt. of A and B for extraction Solvent A is a 1-3C alcohol, 2-6C diol, 1-3C organic acid, 4-hydroxy-3-methyl-2-butanone, acetone or a mxit. of these. Solvent B is a 4-20C alkane, 4-20C alkane, 6-20C alkadiene, 6-10C monocyclic aromatic or a mixt. of these.
