Conventional installations to sew a hem to the edges of large sheets e.g. of bed linen use one conveyor to receive the sheets from the machine, cutting them off a roll, and a second conveyor passing them to the sewing machines. To transfer the sheets from one conveyor to the other, both must stop as well as the sewing machines. To eliminate this loss of prodn., the belts of the second conveyor circulate non-stop either raised or lowered. The lifters on their lower strand can be reciprocated. When these lifters move in the transport direction, they are raised and when moving in the opposite direction, they are lowered. Concurrent photocells control the UP-DOWN movement of the lift belts and of the UP-DOWN and TO-FRO movement of the lifters by sensing the lagging end of one sheet and the leading end of the next sheet.
